At the age of 87, veteran of labor, former general director of the association (from March 1981 to December 1987), honorary citizen of the city of Zelenodolsk, Yuri Ivanovich Katkov passed away. Yuri Ivanovich was born on November 26, 1939, in the city of Orsk, Orenburg region. He began his labor activity at the Orsk Mechanical Plant as an electrician. He went through all stages, working in positions such as: master, senior master, deputy workshop manager, workshop manager, and then deputy director for commercial issues. In March 1981, he was appointed general director of the production association "Factory named after Sergo." While working in this position, and later as deputy general director for construction and social issues, he continued the best traditions of the factory. Through his innovative work, he brought fame and recognition to the factory.
At the beginning of 1981, the association faced a difficult situation regarding the production of consumer goods. It was during this period that Yuri Ivanovich Katkov was appointed general director of the association.
At the enterprise, with a workforce of over 18,000, there was a noticeable shortage of people. It was necessary to send people to break through in workshop No. 15, in the production of consumer goods. Therefore, the first and main task was to resolve this issue through technical re-equipment. In a short period of time, buildings 36 and 42 were constructed and equipped with machinery. In workshop No. 27, significant work was done on the production of wire rod blanks for manufacturing products.
From 1981 to 1987, the association annually developed 3-4 new special products. This allowed the entire commercial and technical potential of the associations to be engaged, increasing production volumes by 15-20% each year and maintaining a stable financial condition. To increase production volumes, workshop No. 6 was built and equipped with modern equipment. A complete reconstruction of the domestic refrigerator building was carried out, and new assembly lines for refrigeration units and refrigerator packaging were installed. To reduce defects, increase the output of refrigeration units, and utilize parts and components, workshop No. 40 was built. The association switched to the production of refrigerators with polyurethane foam mixture. Lines for filling cabinets and PU doors were launched.
To master a new model, workshop No. 29 was built. This allowed for the establishment of the production of the new refrigerator "MIR."
At the beginning of 1981, the association had 4,500 factory workers in need of improved housing conditions. To increase the construction of social and cultural facilities, the construction workshop was reconstructed. The construction of a brick factory was started. Solving these issues allowed for an increase in the volume of housing construction by household methods, and later to completely abandon subcontracting. It was during this period that a polyclinic, a kindergarten, and the construction of a health resort in the city of Primorsk were completed. Significant work was done to develop the subsidiary farm.
Skilled management of production and economic activities allowed the association to enter the ranks of the leading enterprises in the industry and achieve high technical and economic indicators. The team was repeatedly awarded the transitional Red Banners of the Ministry of Machine Engineering of the USSR, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the Council of Ministers of the USSR, and the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. In 1984, the association was inscribed on the Honor Board of the VDNH of the USSR.
In the team, Yuri Ivanovich always enjoyed well-deserved authority. He entered the history of the factory as an innovator. Yu.I. Katkov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor "Friendship of Peoples," medals for valorous labor, "In Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of V.I. Lenin," "Veteran of Labor," and a certificate of honor from the regional committee of the Communist Party and the Council of Ministers of the Tatar ASSR. He was awarded the honorary title "Honored Builder of the Republic of Tatarstan."
The farewell will take place on August 18, 2026, at 10:00 at the address: Zelenodolsk, Lenina, 13, Zelenodolsk Musical Theater (House of Culture "Rodina"), at 11:30 in Zelenodolsk, central cemetery.
