Residents of Tatarstan will be able to observe the convergence of the Moon and Jupiter.
Next week, on the night of September 8 to 9, residents of Tatarstan will be able to see the conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter. This upcoming astronomical event was reported by Yuri Nefedyev, a professor at the Department of Astronomy and Space Geodesy at Kazan Federal University and the scientific director of the V.P. Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory, as stated by the university's press service. The astronomer explained that around 10:00 PM on the 8th will be the moment of maximum closeness between the two celestial bodies. The Moon will cover Jupiter: Earth's natural satellite will pass in front of the gas giant and completely obscure it with its disk. Due to the Moon's proximity to our planet, it can temporarily make it impossible to observe the significantly larger Jupiter, which is much farther away. However, in Kazan, the night light will rise only after 12:30 AM. This means that in the city and throughout Tatarstan, it will not be possible to observe the moment of coverage itself. Nevertheless, the fact that the two objects in the sky will be close to each other will still be noticeable from Earth. Jupiter will, as on all days from September 1 to 23, be located in the constellation Cancer. Its stellar magnitude is 1.8, which is brighter than Mars, whose conjunction with the Moon can be observed on September 6. Yuri Nefedyev drew attention to the greater brightness of the fifth planet of the Solar System.
Moreover, the researcher reminded that when observed with the naked eye, Jupiter appears as a star, but when viewed through binoculars, it is already visible as a planet. "Using a good telescope, one can already distinguish its bands. The more powerful the optics, the more interesting the observation of Jupiter will be," he added.
