Only 22% of Tatarstan residents can afford to buy a new car.
According to preliminary results for 2025, the Republic of Tatarstan ranked 18th in the nationwide ranking for the affordability of buying new cars on credit. A study conducted by RIA Novosti experts showed that 22.8% of families in the region have the financial ability to purchase and maintain an inexpensive new car costing about 1.3 million rubles. More expensive mid-priced models (approximately 2.9 million rubles) are available to only 6.4% of Tatarstan households. Tatarstan’s nearest neighbors in the ranking were Amur Oblast, which came in seventeenth, where a mid-priced car can be afforded by 7% of families, and Irkutsk Oblast in nineteenth place with figures of 22.3% for inexpensive cars and 6.8% for mid-priced cars. The undisputed leader of the study was the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where 57.8% of families can obtain a loan for an inexpensive model, and 29.1% for a mid-range car. The second, third and fourth places, as expected, were occupied by Far North regions with traditionally high income levels: Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Magadan Oblast and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug — Ugra. Moscow was only in fifth place: in the capital a low-cost car on credit is available to 42.1% of families, and a mid-priced one to 20.2%. St. Petersburg was in eleventh position with figures of 31.1% and 10.9% respectively, while Moscow Oblast took twelfth place. As previously stated by the republic’s Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Protection Elmira Zaripova, the share of residents with incomes below the subsistence minimum in Tatarstan is about 3.8%. This figure enables the region to consistently hold third place in the nationwide ranking, behind only the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and St. Petersburg.
