Blood pressure and pregnancy: attention, no panic!
At the Mamadysh Central District Hospital, another class was held in the school for future mothers, timed to coincide with the Week of Fighting Arterial Hypertension. The class on the topic "Blood Pressure and Pregnancy" was conducted by general practitioner Anna Andreevna Davydova. The specialist explained to future mothers what blood pressure readings are considered optimal and warned that symptoms of arterial hypertension may first manifest during pregnancy. Among the possible complications are serious conditions: premature detachment of the placenta, risk of stroke, retinal detachment. This situation is also dangerous for the baby: due to vascular spasms, he receives less oxygen and nutrients. Timely detection and treatment of arterial hypertension minimize these risks. "We ask you to measure your blood pressure every day in the morning and evening and be sure to record the results," emphasized Anna Andreevna.
How to properly measure blood pressure for pregnant women: doctor's advice (save it!)
· Measure twice a day: in the morning and evening, preferably at the same time.
· Before measuring, sit quietly for 5 minutes, do not talk, and do not cross your legs.
· The cuff of the tonometer should be at heart level, and your arm should be resting on the table.
· Do not measure blood pressure immediately after eating, drinking coffee, or after active movements of the baby—wait 20 minutes.
· Measure blood pressure for the first time on both arms; thereafter, use the arm with the higher readings.
· If you are lying on your side or back, the measurement may be inaccurate—always measure while sitting with your back supported by a chair.
· Record all results in a diary and show them to your doctor during appointments.
Prevention of increased blood pressure: what you can do
It is impossible to completely prevent hypertension (other factors also influence it), but it is realistic to reduce risks.
· Salt—do not add extra salt to food (no more than 5 g per day).
· Water—drink plain water instead of sweet teas and drinks: this reduces blood viscosity.
· Movement—walk for 30 minutes (if the doctor has not prohibited it).
· Sleep on your left side from 28 weeks—prevention of preeclampsia.
Important to remember:
· Readings above 135/85 two times in a row are a reason to consult a therapist.
· Headache, "flies" in front of the eyes, high blood pressure—call an ambulance immediately!
· Low blood pressure also requires monitoring, just like high blood pressure.
At the end of the class, future mothers asked the doctor questions, received detailed answers, and thanked Anna Andreevna for the useful and informative lesson. We sincerely wish future mothers easy deliveries and strong, healthy babies!
